Introduction In the 1990's, Hillcrest Cemetery ceased operating as a business and became an abandoned, overgrown site. Families and neighbors came together to help clean up the area, and from those efforts our nonprofit organization was born in 2001. Nearly all maintentance and improvements, other than routine mowing, are provided by volunteers. Donations to HCMA are used for hiring professional lawn care companies for mowing and related tasks. We also take on special projects such as roadway improvements, signage and a planned veterans memorial from time to time. Schedules CLEANUPS We host a volunteer cleanup on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 1pm. SIGN-UP through Hands On Atlanta (optional) MEETINGS Our board meetings are open to the public and are held on the 4th Tuesday of most months. DETAILS |
Recent Announcements SPECIAL EVENT MAY 16! "FINISHED" is a word we never thought we would use when talking about clearing brush at Hillcrest, but the time has come! This past March, with the help of a group of students from Illinois State University, we cleared the last overgrown grave in the cemetery! There's plenty of work left to be done, but the original insumoutable task has been accomplished. Thank you to ALL our volunteers since we began in 2001! HANDS ON ATLANTA DAY 2008 in October was a great success, kicking off the clearing of the last section of overgrown graves - the back of the historic section. This is a wooded area that most of us never thought would be cleared, but we had progressed to the point we could take it on. We had groups of volunteers from across the Atlanta area show up and prove to us that it could be done! Visit our NEWS ARCHIVE for more announcements and information. |
